Submissions

Submission Window Open January through April, 2012

Fear & Trembling is looking for stories of spiritual horror, supernatural thriller, and suspense. [Note: You may also submit stories to ResAliens via this site. The guidelines are essentially the same, just a bit more on
the PG side of things and open to a wider variety of speculative fiction. Thank you.]

We currently publish free content updated monthly at FearandTremblingMag.com (you’re reading it now!). Each monthly issue features 3 short stories. We’re looking for quality speculative fiction with a spiritual foundation. Submissions need not be religious in nature. However, we are looking for engaging stories that, while possibly dark and disturbing in nature, are truthful to the human experience and offer the reader something of the eternal.

What to Write: F&T likes thriller, suspense, and supernatural mystery. Send us a mesmerizing story in the PG to PG-“17” range (mature teen) anywhere along the horror spectrum (excluding porn, gore, and evil-affirming fiction).

Note:F&T does NOT like explicit sexuality, gratuitous violence, or vulgar language, including the f-word, s-word, both b-words, the a-word, or the gd-word (or any use of God’s name used in vain). Sorry to have to spell it out, but no vulgarity means no vulgarity. Thank you.

ResAliens and F&T Accepts…
+ Flash Fiction (900 to 1500 words)
+ Short Stories (1500 to 6000 words, firm; anything beyond this may be serialized)
+ Query First: Serial Novellas (2 to 4 episodic installments; up to 20k words)
+ Query First: A limited variety of poetry and verse (note: this is a hard sell)
+ Query First: Artwork/Artist Interview. Email: resaliens [at] gmail [dot] com.

We Pay…
We offer a one-time payment of $5 per story or artist interview upon acceptance via PayPal, with the option to waive this payment. We’ll also provide a link to your website and/or project page in your Author or Artist Bio. Upon acceptance, your story will appear in an electronic issue and/or print issue, including but not limited to this online venue. Please read the “legalese” section below for the rights we’re purchasing.

+ Please limit your subs to three per month.
+ Simultaneous submissions are fine, just let me know when you send it.

  • Send as a doc, docx, or rtf – upload it via this site (see below).
  • Please use Times New Roman 12 as your font/size.
  • Double space your lines, but don’t put an extra line break between paragraphs (as I’ve done for the stories here at F&T).
  • Refer to this article for how it should look, including author info and header details. But only place one space after the period rather than the way we were taught growing up :) .

Also, please include a short bio and author website or blog if you have one. And tell us how you heard about Fear & Trembling (or ResAliens). We’ll respond within a week to let you know the status of your submission. If you don’t hear from us within that time, query. You may want to consider registering your submission, response, and results at Duotrope’s Digest. It’s free!

Legalese

What this means: ResAliens Press has six months from the date of acceptance to publish your story electronically and/or in print; after this time you may resell it elsewhere, ResAliens Press does not have exclusive use of it. You, the author, also understand that the we, the publisher, may make a profit from distributing the issue in which your work appears and agree that we are not obligated to pay royalties or share any portion of the profit with the author. This is like any other magazine out there. (For more information on your rights as an author, read some of these articles at Writing-World.com.)

We look forward to reading your stories!
