Kwame waited at the bus stop. His only company was a bristly brown-haired dog on a leash attached to an older woman with equally bristly gray hair. She stared at her shoes to avoid looking at him and concentrated on keeping her toes pointed together underneath her drab beige umbrella. She tugged on the dog’s leash periodically to pull it away from Kwame. A cold September wind laced with raindrops made him huddle further into his thin jacket. The bus was late.

Draco Donatello entered the director’s office visibly distempered – shirttail loose, bow tie missing, wine stains on his high-necked, starched-white collar. The director felt his afternoon yogurt turn immediately sour in the pit of his formidable stomach.

“Herr Donatello, what on earth has happened to you?”

“You will not believe it. I dare not say.” Draco plopped himself into one of the director’s aging velvet chairs and began, with great dramatic effect, to dab the sweat from his forehead.

SOMETHING FELT LIKE SKY

When the darkness comes, it behooves us to pay attention.

Walking from my car through the parking lot I saw a footprint that looked for all the world like a cloven hoof. It was in the snow that hadn’t been completely cleared away and stood out from the various other markings of lug boots, inappropriate sneakers, and tire tracks. I searched for other imprints but they – if there were any to begin with – had all been trampled over. I thought of mounted police, but a horse’s hoof was shaped much differently than this. Besides, I had never seen a horse here, in a shopping center just off the highway, surrounded by high tech companies, hotels, restaurants, and suchlike.
